Awe… the cool, clean taste of chilled ice water right out of the tap! There is nothing better than that pure water coming right out of the ground, slowly filtered through rock, pebbles, and sand.

We all know that some water tastes better than others. But what causes the metallic taste of some clear water sources and the sweet taste of others? What makes water pure?

Pure water is made up of three molecules, two hydrogen and one oxygen. These molecules form the basis of all life on this planet. Without the ability for our planet to create this life sustaining force, we would not exist and our planet would be a waste land of minerals and gases.

If pure water is H2O, then what is meant by hard water versus soft water?

When water is referred to as ‘hard’ this simply means, that it contains more minerals than ordinary water, especially the minerals calcium and magnesium. The degree of water hardness is measured by how much more calcium and magnesium dissolve within it. Magnesium and calcium are positively charged ions. Because of their presence, other positively charged substances will dissolve less easy in hard water than in water that does not contain calcium and magnesium.

As it happens, magnesium and calcium are among the essential electrolytes that our body needs to function properly. When we are fasting, these electrolytes are important to absorb along with sodium, potassium, phosphorous, and calcium. Therefore, a certain degree of hard water may be necessary to consume in order to keep these essential minerals flowing through our veins.

What is mineral water?

Mineral water differs slightly from tap water coming from the city water supply. Mineral water comes from deep underground and is not processed by water processing plants. Therefore, it contains essential minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, and sodium. These minerals can be very important aspects of someone who is maintaining an extreme long-term fast.

What is distilled water?

Distilled water is water that is been purified through distillation. This can happen naturally, such as going through the water cycle and coming down from the clouds in the form of rain, or it can happen in a distillery where water is vaporized and then collected in its pure form, H2O. Distilled water does not include any essential minerals, but some companies have begun to add certain minerals to distilled water, such as Smart Water, to create a specific type of water that can be marketed as water with added electrolytes.

Distilled water has its benefits. First of all, pure water has the ability to pick up and carry toxins away with it, as it doesn’t already have other minerals dissolved within it. Distilled water also rids the water of any extra contaminants that might have been associated with the water at the onset.

Think of your tea kettle. When you boil ordinary tap water in your kettle, eventually a thick residue from the minerals dissolved in the water is left on the inside of the kettle walls. However, boiling distilled water in your kettle instead never forms the hard crusted layer of minerals on the walls of the kettle. This is because distilled water does not have them to deposit.

Now, think of the walls of your arteries. While a certain degree of magnesium and calcium in the water is beneficial to one’s body functions, there is some evidence now emerging that hard water may have some potential health impact that should be considered.

Conclusion

Mineral water naturally possesses very important essential minerals our body needs to function well. Mineral water naturally occurs in the ground and does not require alteration or processing to maintain a good balance.

At the same time, distilled water has the capability to carry away toxins in our body that we purge during autophagy while long-term fasting.

It appears that there is a place for both types of water in our fasting regimen and we should make sure that we are taking in all of our essential minerals during this time. A good balance of both types of water can be quite beneficial and thirst quenching as a way to support great health during a fast.
